
The Washington Capitals forward T.J. Oshie has officially retired after a remarkable 16-year journey in the NHL, which culminated in a Stanley Cup victory. At 38, Oshie took a hiatus during the entire 2024-25 season due to a back injury.
In his heartfelt announcement, Oshie stated:
“To my family, friends, coaches, trainers, teammates, fans and to the game of hockey, I promise you this, from the moment my skates touched the ice, I gave you everything I had. With that … I’d like to officially announce my retirement.”
He became a celebrated figure in American hockey during the 2014 Sochi Olympics, scoring four out of six shootout attempts in a memorable game against Russia. Despite not medaling, his performance is etched in Olympic history.
In 2015, he was traded to the Capitals, where he made an immediate impact, scoring 59 goals in his first two seasons. His most notable triumph was helping the team secure its first-ever Stanley Cup in 2018 against the Vegas Golden Knights, contributing significantly during the playoffs with a total of 21 points.
In his career, Oshie recorded an impressive 302 goals and 393 assists over 1,010 games with the St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals.
