FIFA President Gianni Infantino anticipates the excitement surrounding the upcoming 2026 World Cup in North America, highlighting the surge of soccer popularity in the United States.
The excitement is palpable as we approach the 2026 World Cup, scheduled to take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. FIFA’s President, Gianni Infantino, expressed his enthusiasm for the event at a FOX Sports celebration, proclaiming that “Football or soccer is conquering America.” Infantino emphasized that this tournament will be a monumental celebration, with millions expected to revel in various host cities and stadiums.
“We will flip the country upside down, and then back up and back down,” Infantino asserted.
So far, 13 countries are set to participate in the tournament, including the co-hosts, and the new 48-team format will include debut appearances by teams like Uzbekistan and Jordan.
“The emotion is exactly the same whether you’re Argentina, a world champion, or Uzbekistan or Jordan,” he added, highlighting the universal appeal of the sport.
Additionally, leading up to the World Cup, FIFA is organizing a revamped Club World Cup in the U.S. This tournament promises to elevate club football with some of the most talented teams and players.
Infantino described the opening match featuring Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami against Al Ahly FC, which will occur at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. He encourages fans to look forward to an exhilarating year of soccer.
