Mike Dunleavy Reveals Golden State's Strategy for Upcoming NBA Draft and Updates on Jonathan Kuminga

Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy discusses the team's draft strategy and the situation regarding restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga ahead of the NBA Draft.

Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy and the front office have diligently prepared for this week’s NBA Draft, alongside planning for restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, who is rumored to potentially be a trade asset this summer.

Golden State holds the 41st pick overall in the second round but has been actively organizing its draft strategy in anticipation of any possibilities on draft night.

“We handle everything as a process so we can evaluate players effectively,” Dunleavy mentioned. “Since my arrival, we’ve drafted at various levels — multiple second-round picks, the last pick of the first round, etc.”

Dunleavy emphasizes that readiness is key, especially on draft night, when unexpected moves may occur.

The Warriors did not possess a first-round draft choice last year either, having chosen Quinten Post at number 52. He participated in 42 games this season, contributing an average of 8.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Kuminga’s significant contributions during the playoffs highlighted his potential, particularly following the injury to Stephen Curry in Game 1 against the Minnesota Timberwolves, during which he averaged 25 points over four games.

With Golden State needing to match any offers for Kuminga from other teams soon, they must carefully strategize given their salary cap constraints, especially after acquiring Jimmy Butler from the Heat.

The upcoming season will see major salaries allocated to Curry, Butler, and Draymond Green, totaling nearly $172 million. Dunleavy believes clear discussions about Kuminga’s role moving forward are crucial.
