Josh Kroenke Sparks Discussion on Possible Nikola Jokic Trade

Denver Nuggets President addresses trade possibilities concerning star player Nikola Jokic amidst team changes and financial concerns.

After two seasons since clinching the NBA Finals, the Denver Nuggets continue to maintain their status as one of the league’s best teams. Star player Nikola Jokic has been awarded MVP honors three out of the last five seasons, leading many to believe that a trade involving him is out of the question.

However, Nuggets President Josh Kroenke hinted at potential trade scenarios:

“For us, as an organization, going into that second apron is not necessarily something that we’re scared of. […] trading No. 15 [Jokic]”.

He elaborated on the implications of the luxury tax system introduced in the 2023-24 NBA season, stating that exceeding the second apron brings certain penalties such as restrictions on player signings and trades.

Currently, Jokic has three years remaining on a significant contract worth $276.1 million—with his player option for the 2027-28 season valued at $62.8 million. The Nuggets are also managing contracts for other key players, including Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr..

Last season, Jokic achieved impressive averages of 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 10.2 assists, being recognized as a seven-time All-NBA honoree. The team is positioned to stay competitive as they navigate the challenges of the upcoming offseason.
