Boston Legacy FC Appoints Filipa Patao as First Head Coach for 2026 Season

The expansion team Boston Legacy FC has appointed Filipa Patao as their inaugural head coach as they prepare to join the NWSL in 2026.

Boston Legacy FC has finally secured a head coach for their new NWSL expansion team set to debut in 2026. Filipa Patao, with a commendable record of 156 wins, 28 losses, and 15 draws as head coach for the women’s team at Benfica since 2020, will take the reins once her visa is approved.

Patao’s coaching journey begun in 2007 with Benfica’s youth teams. Her leadership has led Benfica to multiple championships, including five consecutive Campeonato Nacional titles.

In a recent statement, Patao expressed her enthusiasm about joining the new club, saying, “I can’t wait to get to the city, meet all the people, and start working.” She emphasized the competitiveness of the American league as a motivating factor for her decision, highlighting her desire to develop both players and the club culture.

Patao’s appointment has been lauded by Jennifer Epstein, controlling owner of Legacy FC, who remarked on her strategic vision for building a championship team. The expansion team received its franchise approval back in September 2023, marking a significant moment for women’s professional soccer in the New England region.
