Olivier Giroud Nearing Transfer to Lille from LAFC

Veteran forward Olivier Giroud is close to sealing a transfer back to Europe, moving from Los Angeles FC to Lille amid mixed performance in MLS.

Olivier Giroud is on the brink of making a notable comeback to Europe, as he is currently in discussions to transfer to Lille from Los Angeles FC, according to sources familiar with the situation.

He previously appeared to conclude his career in Europe’s top leagues when he made the switch from AC Milan to MLS last year. However, the 38-year-old has had difficulty regaining form in LA, netting five goals and assisting three times in 37 matches for Steve Cherundolo’s team. Following his arrival in the U.S., he managed to win the U.S. Open Cup but has struggled to adapt and is reportedly eager to finish his career back in his homeland.

Although negotiations for his move to Stade Pierre-Mauroy are not yet finalized, expectations are high that Lille will secure his signature, especially as they prepare to fill the gap left by Jonathan David after he departs upon his contract’s expiration at month’s end. Currently, Giroud’s contract with LAFC extends through the 2025 season, with an option for an additional year.

With a remarkable tally of 57 goals, Giroud holds the record as France’s all-time leading scorer and played a pivotal role in their 2018 World Cup triumph. His accolades include being Ligue 1’s leading scorer in the 2012 season when Montpellier stunned Paris Saint-Germain to secure the championship, as well as contributing to AC Milan’s first league title in over a decade in 2022. Over his nine-year stay in London, he clinched three FA Cups with Arsenal and both the Champions League and Europa League titles with Chelsea.
