Utah Jazz Owner Confirms Ace Bailey's Arrival on Saturday

Ace Bailey, a promising young player, is set to join the Utah Jazz after some uncertainty regarding his arrival.

In the 1999 film Office Space, Peter Gibbons expressed a discontent with his job, saying he wasn’t going to show up anymore. For former Rutgers star Ace Bailey, it appeared he might have similar thoughts about joining the Utah Jazz. However, after some hesitation, Bailey is expected to report to Utah on Saturday, as noted by team owner Ryan Smith.

Utah selected Bailey as the No. 5 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, but there were concerns because Bailey did not indicate Utah was his top choice. Reports noted that he did not complete any team workouts during the draft process. Despite these doubts, the Jazz executives are optimistic that Bailey’s worries are behind him and he will be an essential asset for the team.

Who is Ace Bailey?

Bailey is a five-star recruit who spent one year at Rutgers, where he put up impressive stats: averaging 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, and one steal per game while shooting 46.0/34.6/69.2.

What else did the Jazz do in the draft?

In addition to Bailey, Utah also acquired the No. 18 pick to select Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr. and Wisconsin guard John Tonje at No. 53. Clayton has already arrived in Salt Lake City, while Bailey delayed his arrival.

What happened with Bailey during the draft process?

Bailey attended the 2025 NBA Draft Combine but did not participate in workouts with any team leading up to the draft, sparking speculation he might prefer to land with a team lower in the draft order. He canceled a workout previously scheduled with the Philadelphia 76ers, who held the No. 3 pick.

What’s the latest on Bailey?

Reports suggested there was minimal communication between Bailey and the Jazz post-draft. Nonetheless, the team maintained confidence that he would present himself by Monday. Bailey’s camp allegedly communicated to another team in the top five that he wouldn’t report if they selected him, although it’s unclear if that was the Jazz.

Jazz president Austin Ainge has praised Bailey, stating:

“He’s great. We were able to speak with him. He was super excited. We’re super excited. We’re expecting a very bright future. His scoring attracts attention, [and] deservedly so. He’s very skilled for his size. His defensive effort and rebounding are impressive, particularly weakside blocks, and he brings joy and energy to the game. Everyone enjoys being around Ace.”

What’s the next date to circle?

The unofficial start of NBA free agency is set for June 30 at 6:00 p.m. ET, allowing teams to negotiate with agents of previously uncontracted players. The Salt Lake City Summer League will begin on July 5, where Bailey is anticipated to play a significant role.
