Brian Kelly Responds to Claims of Cutting Ties with Former Player Greg Brooks Jr. During His Cancer Treatment

LSU coach Brian Kelly addresses accusations made by Greg Brooks Jr.'s family regarding his lack of contact following the athlete's emergency surgery for a brain tumor.

LSU coach Brian Kelly has refuted claims made by the family of former player Greg Brooks Jr. about a lack of support during the player’s battle with brain cancer. Recently, Brooks Jr.’s family stated that they hadn’t received any communication from Kelly or his staff since Brooks underwent emergency surgery in October 2023 to remove a brain tumor.

In a press conference, Coach Kelly labeled the family’s accusations as “factually incorrect,” mentioning that staff members were present to support Brooks throughout his recovery. Kelly expressed deep concern over the family’s sentiment, stating, “We love Greg for who he is, his competitive spirit, and his resilience during this tough time.”

Bringing attention to the emotional weight of the allegations, Kelly commented that the words of Brooks Sr. hit him hard. “It rattled me that somebody could possibly be so factually incorrect in stating that I was not part of Greg Brooks Jr.’s care and support.”

The lawsuit filed by Brooks Jr. alleges negligence from the university and a Louisiana hospital in connection with the treatment that led to his career-ending diagnosis. Further details of the situation revealed that Brooks Jr. had passed out during a team practice prior to the tumor’s discovery, but he was allowed to return, as the coaching staff pressured him to participate.

Brooks Sr. also shared his distress at being informed only when surgery was imminent, highlighting his frustration at the communication breakdown during such a critical period. Following his surgery, Brooks Jr. has faced significant challenges including the need for rehabilitation and adjusting to life post-operation.

Throughout his time as a player, Brooks Jr. made a notable impact at both Arkansas and LSU, eventually culminating in a passionate call for the community’s support and acknowledgment during his ongoing recovery.
