Warriors Coach Advocates for NBA Trade Deadline to Shift to All-Star Break

Steve Kerr suggests that moving the NBA trade deadline to coincide with the All-Star break could alleviate tensions surrounding last-minute trades, following the Warriors' acquisition of Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat.

The Golden State Warriors experienced an unusual and emotionally charged night as news broke that the team was acquiring Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat shortly before tip-off against the Utah Jazz. This forced the team to part ways with Andrew Wiggins, Dennis Schroder, Kyle Anderson, and Lindy Waters III, who were all part of the trade deal. Ultimately, the Warriors lost the game, blowing a double-digit lead and falling 131-128.

After the game, coach Steve Kerr refrained from discussing Butler or the trade as it was not yet official, but he expressed thoughts on the trade deadline’s timing. “The league should consider making the trade deadline at the All-Star break,” Kerr stated, suggesting it would prevent situations where players face trades shortly before games, forcing them to juggle emotions with competition.

In previous years, the trade deadline was set up in a manner that allowed teams to adjust before the All-Star break, minimizing disruptions caused by last-minute trades. Kerr’s concerns echoed the sentiments from 2017 when DeMarcus Cousins discovered his trade from the Sacramento Kings to the New Orleans Pelicans during the All-Star Game press conference.

Kerr also remarked on the difficulty trades impose on teams, families, and players, calling for adjustments to benefit all involved. While moving the trade deadline to the All-Star break could solve some issues, it could also complicate the league’s premier weekend.

Unless the league abolishes trades, which seems unlikely, teams will need to navigate the ups and downs accompanying the deadline.
