Golden State Warriors Acquire Jimmy Butler; New Contract in the Works
The Warriors have completed a trade with the Miami Heat to acquire Jimmy Butler, who is expected to ink a two-year contract extension worth $121 million.
The trade involving Jimmy Butler has finally concluded. The Miami Heat have sent the disgruntled six-time All-Star to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for a package that includes Andrew Wiggins, Dennis Schröder, and Kyle Anderson, along with a protected first-round draft pick, as reported by ESPN on Wednesday.
Trade Breakdown
- Warriors receive: Jimmy Butler
- Heat receive: Andrew Wiggins, P.J. Tucker, Kyle Anderson, protected first-round pick
- Jazz receive: Dennis Schröder
- Pistons receive: Lindy Waters III, Josh Richardson
Once this trade is finalized, Butler is set to sign a two-year contract extension worth $121 million with the Warriors, according to ESPN.
The Warriors were also looking at various players leading up to the Feb. 6 trade deadline, including Kevin Durant. However, after Durant expressed his disinterest in returning to San Francisco, they shifted their focus to Butler.
Butler will now be joining a Warriors roster that features two-time league MVP Stephen Curry and four-time All-Star Draymond Green. At the moment, the Warriors are ranked No. 10 in the Western Conference with a record of 25-24.
Butler’s last month with the Heat was tumultuous. He returned from a seven-game suspension on Jan. 17 after being deemed to have violated conduct guidelines set by the team. He faced another two-game suspension shortly thereafter for missing a team flight, followed by an indefinite suspension for leaving practice early.
Before this incident, the 2015 NBA Most Improved Player had openly stated he lost his on-court “joy” in Miami. The team subsequently confirmed he requested a trade soon after.
In his first season, the Heat made it to the NBA Finals and repeated the same feat in 2023, marking their second Finals appearance in four years.
This season, Butler has participated in 25 games, averaging 17 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.8 assists.
Wiggins, a vital contributor to the Warriors’ championship run in 2021-22, departs after six seasons in Golden State. Meanwhile, Schröder’s stay with the Warriors was brief; he was traded only two months after being acquired.
