The New Orleans Pelicans and forward Herbert Jones have agreed to a three-year, $68 million extension, as reported by ESPN. This agreement means that Jones’s total contract is now for five years and worth $97 million, including a player option for the 2029-30 season.
Jones, aged 26, faced a challenging season last year, participating in only 20 games before he was sidelined in January due to a shoulder injury. He underwent surgery in February to address the issue and was subsequently shut down for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.
In terms of performance, Jones averaged 10.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. Notably, he had a standout season in 2023-24, receiving first-team All-Defense honors as the sole non-center among the selectees. Standing at 6-foot-7, Jones averaged 11.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.4 steals, establishing himself as a formidable perimeter defender.
Jones has been a regular starter, playing in 231 of 240 games since being drafted by New Orleans in the second round of the 2021 NBA Draft, where he earned second-team All-Rookie honors for his reliable defensive capabilities.
As a senior at Alabama in 2021, he was awarded both the SEC Player of the Year and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year after averaging 11.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game.
