Goldberg dominated WCW during the late ’90s with his unmatched prowess. Fast forward nearly thirty years, and he now faces Gunther at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on the brink of retirement, despite enduring significant personal challenges.
“The circumstances are not always to your liking,” Goldberg shared with CBS Sports. “But you adapt and overcome. It’s a very overwhelming time for me… At 58, I’m not going to lament losing sleep while trying to perform under immense pressure on live television.”
His ailing left knee limits his trademark tackle, while a strained shoulder jeopardizes his finishing maneuver. Various injuries have clouded his preparations for his farewell match, compounded by the weight of personal tragedy as his retirement week unfolds.
Goldberg reflected, “My father-in-law passed away last weekend, and the devastating floods on July 4 in the Hill Country were harrowing. I struggle to find words to explain it as a local resident.”
At 58, he never envisioned competing for one last world title. Initially, he intended to retire following his bout with Roman Reigns in 2022, which didn’t materialize. With numerous obligations, postponing his retirement seemed logical. However, Goldberg seeks no easy exit.
“Everyone wants to dictate their own exit, and this is mine. It’s a privilege, and I won’t waste the chance to cement my legacy on my terms.”
Goldberg draws from past struggles that highlight his perseverance under pressure. During this pivotal week, he recalls mixed emotions—previous encounters with Bret Hart and Brock Lesnar add dimension to his current mindset.
“There are highs and lows. Every individual experiences it, and I’m no exception. I aspire for people to appreciate my efforts and enjoy my performances.”
“What I’ve instilled in my son is that moments defined by hurt should be your motivation to push forward,” he added.
Among an array of iconic moments, Goldberg recalls a cherished memory when former Atlanta Falcons teammates, including Cornelius Bennett and Jessie Tuggle, defended him after a backstage ambush.
“Their support, coming from my football roots, made me feel complete. For those brief moments, I sensed that they wished to emulate me, which was the highlight of my career.”
As Goldberg approaches what may be his final showdown against Gunther, he is resolved to leave everything in the ring, undeterred by physical ailments. He is ready to confront his opponent in Atlanta, embracing the weight of this closing chapter.
