Former No. 7 overall pick Mike Williams, a wide receiver, has formally announced his retirement from the NFL at the age of 30 after eight seasons.
Williams previously signed a one-year contract to remain with the Los Angeles Chargers but was placed on the physically unable to perform list recently. After careful consideration, he has decided to retire from football.
Williams had a noteworthy career beyond his time with the Chargers, having also played for the New York Jets and the Pittsburgh Steelers after a mid-season trade, where he recorded 21 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown.
In his time with the Chargers, he achieved notable success, including two 1,000-yard receiving seasons and leading the NFL with a remarkable 20.4 yards per reception in 2019. In total, across 106 games, Williams made 330 receptions for 5,104 yards and scored 32 touchdowns.
As Williams departs, Justin Herbert will now rely on other targets, including Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, as well as rookies Tre Harris and Keandre Lambert-Smith.
