Marcus Smart Finalizes Buyout with Wizards, Set to Join Lakers on 2-Year Deal

Marcus Smart leaves the Wizards to reinforce the Lakers' backcourt for a playoff run.

Marcus Smart has reached a buyout agreement with the Washington Wizards and plans to join the Los Angeles Lakers by signing a two-year, $11 million contract after clearing waivers. This decision follows an injury-plagued period where he played just 54 games over the last two seasons. Smart, a noted defensive asset, was recognized as the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year and has earned All-Defensive First Team honors three times.

“It is reported that Luka Doncic reached out to Smart personally to express his desire to have him on the team.”

This strategic move is anticipated to enhance the Lakers’ defense and overall depth as they aim for a successful playoff campaign.

Throughout his 11 seasons in the NBA, Smart has maintained an average of 10.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, establishing himself as one of the league’s top perimeter defenders, averaging 1.6 steals per game.

Smart recently played 15 games for the Wizards after being traded from the Memphis Grizzlies midseason. However, his competitive spirit and defensive abilities remain highly sought after in the league, having previously spent nine years with the Boston Celtics, where he was a pivotal figure in their defensive lineup.
