On the first day of training camp, which started last week, the Miami Dolphins experienced a significant scare. Offensive lineman Bayron Matos was seriously injured toward the end of the practice session and was subsequently airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
According to reports from CBS News, Matos was released from the hospital. The morning following his injury, the Dolphins announced that he remained hospitalized for evaluation and testing, although he was noted to have had movement in all his extremities.
Matos’s agent informed The Miami Herald that he had suffered an “above-the-shoulder type injury,” although it remained uncertain whether this involved his neck, spine, or another region.
Entering his second season in the NFL, Matos went undrafted last year after playing college football at South Florida. Originally from the Dominican Republic, he moved to Tennessee at the age of 16. He initially pursued basketball at the University of New Mexico before transitioning to football with the Dolphins, after starting as a defensive end and designated kick blocker before moving to the offensive line.
Matos was also highlighted as one of the 16 participants in the International Player Pathway Program for 2024, and he impressed scouts during workouts at IMG Academy before the draft.
