The New York Yankees made significant moves on Thursday, bolstering their bullpen just before the MLB’s trade deadline. However, manager Aaron Boone’s plans went awry during a matchup against the Miami Marlins.
Starting with a commanding 6-0 lead into the fourth inning, the Yankees were soon in for a rude awakening, allowing the Marlins to close the gap to 9-4 by the seventh inning. Boone entrusted the new acquisition Jake Bird, sourced from the Colorado Rockies to handle the situation. Sadly, the inning deteriorated quickly with Bird allowing hits and a walk that culminated in a grand slam by All-Star Kyle Stowers.
As the game progressed, Boone attempted to stabilize the situation by bringing in another recently acquired pitcher, former Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar but his efforts also proved fruitless. Bednar allowed runs to score, resulting in a tied game at 9-9 after a home run hit by utility player Javier Sanoja.
Heading into a tense final inning, Boone called upon the last of his new bullpen signings, Camilo Doval, for a save opportunity. A defensive blunder by newcomer José Caballero led to another run for the Marlins, who then scored the winning hit, sealing a disheartening 13-12 defeat for the Yankees.
Across this disastrous inning, the New York bullpen trio, Bird, Bednar, and Doval, allowed nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits, leading to only seven outs recorded, echoing the familiar phrase “not what you want” attributed to previous Yankees manager Joe Girardi.
Notably, according to CBS Sports research, the Yankees had a solid streak of 57 straight wins when leading by six runs. Their last failure in such a context was against the same Marlins during the 2023 season.
