The Milwaukee Brewers started the Friday game against the Washington Nationals at the top of the National League Central. However, they’ll need to compete without one of their standout players, as they have placed outfielder Jackson Chourio on the injured list (retroactive to July 30) due to a right hamstring strain.
Chourio’s roster spot will be filled by fellow outfielder Brandon Lockridge, who was acquired shortly before Thursday’s trade deadline when the Brewers traded left-hander Nestor Cortes to the San Diego Padres.
The 21-year-old Chourio sustained the injury on Tuesday while running to complete a triple. In his 106 games this season, he has an average of .276 with a OPS+ of 119, hitting 17 home runs and stealing 18 bases, which have been worth about 2.3 Wins Above Replacement according to Baseball Reference.
The Brewers have yet to provide a definite return date, but it seems the injury is worse than initially estimated, indicating he could miss more than the 10-day minimum. Players typically miss around 27 days for a strained hamstring, suggesting Chourio might be absent for much of August before rejoining the team.
Lockridge, 28, is recognized more for his defensive abilities, having a career batting line of .210/.248/.280 in 59 Major League games, including a home run and 10 stolen bases.
