Mike Gundy Raises Concerns About College Sports Commission, Calls for Unified Leadership

Oklahoma State's head coach, Mike Gundy, voices skepticism about the effectiveness of the College Sports Commission, advocating for a singular authority to streamline decision-making in college athletics.

There’s a new enforcement body taking shape in college athletics aimed at regulating NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) transactions; however, Mike Gundy, head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys, remains unconvinced that the College Sports Commission (CSC) is capable of addressing the pressing issues in college football.

The CSC was established alongside the settlement of NCAA v. House, tasked with verifying the legitimacy of NIL agreements and administering a revenue-sharing model that commenced on July 1. Despite these plans, the CSC has encountered resistance, particularly from NIL collectives, and has had to amend its previous guidance concerning direct payments to athletes.

“The CSC is scared right now, right?” Gundy said during a media session. “I mean, what power do they have? They’re already being sued.”

While the CSC hasn’t been formally sued, it faces challenges from attorneys who contend its regulations breach the terms of the House settlement, prompting clarifications regarding the kinds of payments permitted, including those from NIL collectives that fulfill a “valid business purpose.”

Gundy argues for a clearer hierarchy within college sports, proposing that instead of having multiple governing bodies like the NCAA and CSC, there should be a single authoritative figure at the helm.

“You gotta get one person in charge, and then they gotta get the four power people in the room,” Gundy emphasized. “They all gotta start talking about equality and how can we revenue-share across the country.”

He further articulated that the current NIL concerns are merely a segment of the broader challenges confronting college sports, which also involve the tension of player poaching via the transfer portal and the immense pressures on coaches. According to Gundy, a cohesive leadership structure is critical for facilitating productive discussions and solutions.

“We could talk about it for three hours, but there’s a solution to it, and there’s gotta be a give-and-take,” Gundy asserted. “But until one person’s in charge, there won’t be a lot of give and take.”
