Luka Dončić Signs Major Extension with Lakers, Shares Heartfelt Message
Luka Dončić secures a three-year extension with the Los Angeles Lakers worth $165 million, including a player option for the 2028-29 season.
Luka Dončić will be staying in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future after signing a lucrative three-year extension worth $165 million with the Lakers. This contract includes a player option for the 2028-29 NBA season, as reported by ESPN.
Previously, Dončić was on a five-year deal worth $215.2 million, with an opt-out clause available for the 2026-27 season. The Lakers traded for Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks in February, a deal that involved five-time All-NBA player Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a future first-round pick.
At just 26 years old, Dončić boasts impressive averages of 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 1.6 steals per game, maintaining shooting splits of 43.8%, 37.9%, and 79.1% during his 28 regular-season games with the Lakers. The team finished as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference but suffered defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games during the playoff first round.
In other offseason moves, the Lakers have signed center Deandre Ayton for two years at $16.2 million, guard Marcus Smart at $10.5 million, and forward Jake LaRavia for $12 million. Additionally, Lakers legend LeBron James opted into his hefty $52.6 million salary for the upcoming season.
Previously, Dončić spent over five seasons with the Mavericks, notably leading them to the 2024 NBA Finals and making it to the Western Conference Finals twice.
